Sankei Shimbun:Narita Airport celebrate 35 anniversary in 2013

Narita Airport in Japan has just celebrated its 35th anniversary. Narita Airport’s passenger numbers reached 30 million people and has become "Japan's gateway". Due to Haneda International Airport’s aviation liberalization, the competition between domestic and international airports is becoming increasingly fierce. With the expansion of low-cost airlines, in addition to the remote international routes, Narita Airport will also work to strengthen domestic routes and short-haul international routes, in order to survive the fierce competition.

Most major international flights in Tokyo land at Narita International Airport. Haneda Airport is relatively close to the downtown Tokyo and is mainly responsible for domestic routes and a few regional international routes.

Narita Airport experienced violent conflict in 1987. The airport had only one 4,000 meters runway A. Runway B has been put into use in 2009 and is extended to 2500 meters. There are daily 580 flights taking off and landing at this airport. In 2006, Narita International Airport Corporation formally applied to the Government for an extension of the second runway to 2,500 meters and was approved. The second runway was originally scheduled to open in 2010 and actually opened on 22 October 2009. It helps enhance the flow of Narita Airport.

Chiba Prefecture, Japan. It is Japan's largest international airport and is a joint Tokyo International Airport. It ranks second in passenger traffic in Japan. Narita Airport is hub airport of Japan Airlines, All Nippon Airways and Delta Airlines. According to the Japanese airport classification, Narita Airport, Tokyo International Airport (Haneda Airport), Osaka International Airport (Itami Airport), Kansai International Airport and Central Japan International Airport are unified into a first class airport.
